Good Is New York City: Range of 5 Products

I have chosen to research into a range of ways of holding documents or publications together, as I am considering producing some sort of publication which maybe materialise across a series of printed ephemera and publications. A belly band can be made from a range of different stocks, often a stock thats compliments the stock being used within the documents it holds together, however it need to be a durable stock, but still flexible enough to fit around the documents. In terms of sustainability a belly band could be both a permanant part of a publication or temporary until brought and used. A belly band is constructed from one piece of card that is folded exactly to width of the publications it will hold together and is then commonly glued together at the back, it normally covers around 1/3 of the publication and is positioned in the middle however these are all specific design decisions. In industry this would probably be produced on large sheets and then cut down to size either using a die cut or guillotine depending on printed run and frequency. In the studio this could easily be printed in the digital dungeon, cut with a scalpel or guillotine and affixed together with glue or doubled sided tape. This is not something I would send off to be made, I would make it myself in the studio and I would probably consider setting aside around 30 minutes to make including printing and making.

The type of holder is simply string that keeps the documents together, however this is very auidence specific as with the belly band for example the aesthetic, printed design can be changed to target a specific audience whereas string has it's own aesthetic and meaning and audience of the final publication should be considered before using this. For example it could be something that could be used to target a specific Brooklyn auidence but I wouldn't consider using this for a publication aimed at those in Manhatten - Stereotypically. This is a very sustainable method of document as it can be used again or can easily be recycled, it also doesn't use much of original material. In industry and in the studio it would be produced in the same way and would have to be done by hand and individually for every set of publications. This would take a matter of minutes to put together, however this method could be taken further by adding a tag for example which would take more time to produce.

This document holder would be aimed an audience that is paying more for the publication if it were going to be sold, as it involves the use of more materials and longer more complex production methods.  This again could be made from a range of stocks, would be something that compliments the publication its self, this holder is very protective and durable, so the documents inside are likely to be of a weaker stock and less durable therefore this holder will be made from a thicker, heavier more durable stock to protect its inner contents. This is not a very sustainable document holder as once it's opened for the first time, it become redundant or least less productive than in it's original form and would mostly likely be thrown away as you have to damage the holder in order to get to the document, however this interaction may outweigh the need for sustainability, furthermore it has been printed on both side with uses more ink. This would be constructed from a flat net and glued together to form the box itself. Within industry this would likely be printed using four colour offset lithography or digitally printed, and then die cut using a die which has cuts that cut directly thought the stock and others that perforate the stock so it can be ripped by the end user. In the studio this would need to be printed with James, double sided and then cut out using a Scalpel. Another tool that perforates the card would also need to be used to create the tearable section. I would consider planning around 2 hours to produced this holder including printing time with James.
This type of document holder has a high production value and would therefore be aimed at an auidence who read luxury publications. The stock would be a grey board, or other heavy duty card or board stock which is then covered in the desired stock. This is not vert sustainable as it uses a lot of material for something that provides more aesthetic than it does meaning or to provide protection. If it were made from grey board and then covered it would be cut into separate pieces and sides and the covering would hold the pieces together. However if it were made from the stock without a covering it would constructed from net. In industry this would be produced
