I have been developing this process of coming up with concept within the main what is good brief and within the smaller briefs. I have applied the skills from responsive and the studio sessions within this module to come up with a range of concepts for set briefs and then be analytical in the selection of the most appropriate and relevant concept.<br /><br />Within the module I have also chosen to focus more towards digital design, in particular focusing on user interface design and I have been developing those skills within the main what is good brief. After the initial concept development stage, my final concept involved developing an mobile application. With this in mind I have, from the beginning, been developing a set of skills which involve me working to a professional work through. For example developing brand guidelines and creating pixel perfect design that work on the iPhone screen. These new skills have been applied well as the iPhone mock up that I have created working perfectly on iPhone and is of the correct proportions, skills which I didn’t use or have in previous modules when I’ve designed for iPhone. <br /><br /><br /><b>What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process? </b>The main approach to design development that I used within the brief was producing a set of brand guidelines at the beginning of the brief which I then used as a guide for everything I designed and is something that would happen in a professional design studio and something I have been trying to emulate within the module. I helped greatly in ensuring continuity between everything that I was designing. I think the production of the research booklet was also a new approach to design production as I used my research booklet like my brand guidelines as a constant reference for the content of what I was designing for which meant I was designing relevant products for an appropriate auidence. <br /><br /><br /><div>
<b>What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalize on these? </b><br />The main skills which I have focusing on developing have been my digital design skills and these are skills which I hope to capitalize on during the summer I go on placement at a digital design studio. I have been working on developing a professional work flow which I can take forward with me as I begin to specialize in this area of design in the future. <br /><br />Putting boards together is a skills that I have been developing since the start of my second year and is something I think I have got tremendously good at and is something that has been put into practice a lot within this modules briefs. Especially within the what is good brief in which I created 15 boards to demonstrate the final products and the application. Moving forward this will be a skills that I will carry with me into my future as a graphic designer as it’s an essential tool to my practice. <br /><br /><br /><b>What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?</b> <br />One weakness I can identity within my work is my range of print based products, I struggle make print a relevant format for my main what is good brief. The main concept was heavily digital focused and I found it difficult to find relevant and appropriate print based products that weren’t just being designed for the sake of having printed products. I overcame this by pushing my concept a little further and relating my concept to business. Print techniques however also lacked within the final printed products as again it simply wasn’t relevant to use them in the products I designed, however I have still developed skills in producing and outsourcing print jobs as well as working across print and digital, as the works in RGB whereas print is CYMK. <br /><br /><br /><b>Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these? </b><br /><ul>
<li>If I were to to do this brief again, time management would be the main aspect that I would aim to structure better, time management isn’t something I usually struggle with however within the module I haven’t dealt with it all to well as I’ve left a lot of until the end which is no way to work. If I had better time managed then this meant I would have had to push briefs further. </li>
<li>I would leave myself time to learn After Effects, during the initial concept stages of the brief I proposed that I would make a video demonstration of the app but I had never worked with after effects before, I spent a few days trying to work with the software but couldn’t achieve the results I wanted so I had to abandoned that aspect of the brief. </li>
<li>I would aim to experiment with more print techniques, as my brief was heavily digitally based it was hard for me to do this thought I did bring this aspect into the production of my research booklet instead. However I would still have liked to experiment with some new techniques. </li>
<li>If I were redoing this brief I would probably want to push the concept even further and see where it could go in terms of being a brand experience rather than just an app and website and also push the business side of the application and how montization can inform features of the application. </li>
<li>I would also plan for contingency time when outsourcing print jobs as I found out in within the what is good brief not everything always goes to plan and prints don’t always arrive when they say they should so time should be planned to allow for thing like this to happen and for them to be overcome. </li>
</ul>
<br />Attendance = 4 <br />Punctuality = 5 <br />Motivation = 5 <br />Commitment = 5 <br />Quantity of work produced = 4<br />Quality of work produced = 5</div>

The website component of the brief works in sync with the mobile application, as the mobile application is used for the actual experience and exploration of the city, the website allows the user to relive this experience online, over and over. The websites used Google Maps StreetView, in which the detour is then mapped on top. The reason for this is I wanted the user to feel as if they are back exploring new york, and streetview allows me to do this. The same path the user took on the detour is created digital and you move through the experience as if you're walking down the street. </div>

Demonstrated here alike the app the points of interest that the user encountered along the way also appear on the online detour, all of the these points can easily be accessed with the timeline of the detour at the bottom of the webpage. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When a user click on a point of interest and light box appears over the page, where they are then provided with the relevant information, this works as a three column layout in the first column details that specific point of interest encountered and the middle collumn shows the photos taken and the final column allows for comments which are linked to the detourers Facebook pages. this allows for themselves and their friends to comment on their detour experience. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These columns are also responsive in that they can be expanded and collapses to revealed less or more information. For example if a user wanted to see the photos at a larger scale the middle column can be expanded to show larger photos. </div>

To promote the application to new tourists and to get people to start downloading and using the application I have decided to created a mail shot which can be mailed to tourists with there tickets for example for this can act as a leaflet to given out at tourist information centres. The idea of the viewmaster stems from the functionality within the app which works like a viewmaster when the user chooses there detour, therefore I have decided to translate this into a paper version as a way to promote the application. </div>

Initially before designing the viewmaster I did some research into the visual aesthetic of the View Master and how it worked and looked so I had a point of reference for when I was designing my own. I gathered a selection of images from the internet as well as starting to develop and initial range of possible colours. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
From here I created a Mock up of how my paper based view master would work, It consists of three pieces the front and back of the view master and the the middle section which moves round in a circular motion alike the view master. </div>

Using the mock up and my initial research into the visuals of the viewmaster I have created my viewmaster using illustrator. The traditional view master is red in colour however my brand is based in the colour orange therefore I have made the viewmaster orange with a red tint to make sure the idea and concept still translates to the target audience. </div>

For the Detour Business part of the brief I am creating a promo pack to advertise the application to local business in New York, the pack works at two part, the A2 paper fold into an A5 format, this will be the format which is sent through the post, as the user fold out this A5 format the pieces acts as a leaflet explain the application how it works and how it can benefit there business. Once completely folded out by user the reserve side of the page is an A2 poster, this is a poster to put up within their business to promote the application to their customer. Initially I have started to plan out how this format will work within the mock up above, doing this is also beneficial as it has enabled to see what content goes where and which orientation the content needs to be in. </div>

I think this type or crit and keeping the same crit groups has worked well as we all know each other's work well which makes the feedback we give me useful and valuable. In this crit we each presented our work much like we have been doing previously. At this point I still have much work to do on this brief so at the crit I presented the mobile app designs on my iPhone so that people could see how the app would like on an iPhone. I received positive feedback from the work I had completed so far. The main piece of feedback that I received was from Lorraine and she suggested that I don't attempt to make the application video until everything else is complete, as I mentioned to her this was my next task she said to get everything else out of the way first as it's my first time making a video and it could potentially be quite time consuming. I am taking this on board and re adjusting my time schedule and making sure all my other work in relation to this brief is complete before I start work on the video.Thomas Squirehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04051505386930820837noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8499686287853609409.post-53548617994342598112013-05-16T08:10:00.000+01:002013-05-23T14:22:32.945+01:00Good is New York City: App Development<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have now developed all of the key components needed to design the application, I have produced my brand guidelines, a range of icons and a range of illustrations I can now start to bring these elements together to form the application. Using the initial timeline of the application I created for the second concept crit I have created a more solid idea of exactly the path the user will take through the app and separate interfaces I need to design. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The final poster that I have produced for studio brief 3, I had the poster externally printed, digitally as I knew James was hectic in the print room. I paid extra for delivery to have it in time for the crit. However I, Stupidly, had it sent to the billing address instead of different shipping address I therefore didn't attend the crit as I had no other way of printing the poster as it was due to arrive on the day of the crit. A lesson to be learnt here, the hard way to always check where the package is going to be sent to! As a result of this I missed the crit which I am really disappointed about as I heard it was a fun and interesting crit! </div>

Therefore I have developed the poster digitally and will be externally printing the poster.<br />

As I am not using analog processes to produce the poster I have tried to replicate the effects of these processes digitally, such as the black print of the newspaper, the worn, aged effect on the newspaper as well as the show through that you can achieve with screen printing. I am fairly happy with the final products however I would have liked it a lot more had it have actually been screen printed. </div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The concept crit was split into two parts, for the first part of the crit we were placed into small groups and we each discussed and presented our ideas a process we are all familiar with now. When I presented my ideas I received a fairly positive reaction to all of my concepts and the group was torn between two of my ideas, the highlight concept and the eye candy concept. People liked the eye candy concept because it had really nice visual to communicate the concept where the highlight concept was liked because it had a strong concept and related to the exhibition itself. Imogen gave me a great piece of feedback in that she suggested I placed students work in the background of the newspaper so that the concept worked on two levels in that it promoted the exhibition and this poster itself already began to highlight some of the achievements of the course. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzypgj3_2n2YgMjGrBMIanhyphenhyphenf1e1vN1WOtsi29dSwueYEddksvnOfbVCastdzreNyCd2y2NbHTy3DcduVani0IXNDCMwdXnx1N_FwtiUEzuquzJBFTX9LI5c4Tw0eJk_y2CPp2CD4ty-Vt/s1600/DSC04398.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzypgj3_2n2YgMjGrBMIanhyphenhyphenf1e1vN1WOtsi29dSwueYEddksvnOfbVCastdzreNyCd2y2NbHTy3DcduVani0IXNDCMwdXnx1N_FwtiUEzuquzJBFTX9LI5c4Tw0eJk_y2CPp2CD4ty-Vt/s640/DSC04398.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the second part of the crit we disbanded the small groups and as a class we got to look at everybody's work and then leave written feedback with people work. This process was just as informative as the first half of the crit and for this solidified which idea I should choose to run with and produce for this brief. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the final part of the crit as a class we each presented that idea we had chosen to produce to the whole class, simon gave bits of feedback throughout his process and said that he liked my idea as it showcased the achievements of the course as well as denominating demonstrating why we have the reputation that we do. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will be moving forward with the 'Highlight' concept as it was liked my many of the people that viewed my work, furthermore I is the strongest of the concepts I developed as it promotes the exhibition as well as the course it also has a more unique visual aspect than my other designs. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCYEiuzislkXMp_B43csF8y1bHn67umP4sESCLHhXzqu0alHIbTmfbBfiDn6xZuSVPevQa-W4px7A5wDxgGvElwRef8tY2mhyeUAYtxsZXwH8t0kUg-joBFzIUKaVtmUApb04y1rfSyo1m/s1600/DSC04399.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCYEiuzislkXMp_B43csF8y1bHn67umP4sESCLHhXzqu0alHIbTmfbBfiDn6xZuSVPevQa-W4px7A5wDxgGvElwRef8tY2mhyeUAYtxsZXwH8t0kUg-joBFzIUKaVtmUApb04y1rfSyo1m/s640/DSC04399.JPG" width="442" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Concept 1: Made By Us</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first concept that I have developed was based on the premise that the work in the exhibition is ours, it's been made by us and this is where the name has come from. Pushing the concept further I also thought how this concept might work in the future of the exhibition, for example, is the theme for one month of the exhibition was movie posters it would be called, <i>Movie Posters Made By Us</i>, or <i>Modernism Made By Us </i>and so on and so through. The visuals that I have developed to go along with the concept are simple and effective they communicate the sense that the exhibition is in the preparation stages and is getting ready to begin, the large type may also attract attention to poster. Visually it's also a pun to graphic design and out use of InDesign software.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_DeJL92dZ6HGesiNLvrz6mgqvBx8xP1fwgguoLfG8VIrsC2xw2bsf639UAK6a0IHjykPUp9z5fsFqSAEV25Tgrch3P9VeqvB9cNyUxZyfraNWtDtZCx0mxUMdmG5lqUmnzbxeSc6y0qbc/s1600/DSC04401.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_DeJL92dZ6HGesiNLvrz6mgqvBx8xP1fwgguoLfG8VIrsC2xw2bsf639UAK6a0IHjykPUp9z5fsFqSAEV25Tgrch3P9VeqvB9cNyUxZyfraNWtDtZCx0mxUMdmG5lqUmnzbxeSc6y0qbc/s640/DSC04401.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Concept 2: Eye Candy</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This idea actually developed out of something that I am working on fro Context of practice, I have chosen to develop this idea because of the visual aesthetic that's produce. The concept is eye candy, pure and simple the posters themselves are pieces of eye candy. It also links in with that idea of designers designing for designers and that when doing this you can make something that is just beautiful to look which maybe one of the aspects of the exhibition whereas normally we design with a purpose. I like this design and concept because I think the concept and visuals are fun and striking.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRmHeU1OlQtYnMR36ZPTzB4RzLB6_7Y5N6-BGPGeyBJaQTLMlYqE7F3vACwRYkKatCetpavoK8QJfBDySlHj3Xoq6Z2jAxOMlotE9zEbIEQTcHbAMyyuX8MWxuVEnQgxZnFyB41PVnrYN6/s1600/DSC04402.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRmHeU1OlQtYnMR36ZPTzB4RzLB6_7Y5N6-BGPGeyBJaQTLMlYqE7F3vACwRYkKatCetpavoK8QJfBDySlHj3Xoq6Z2jAxOMlotE9zEbIEQTcHbAMyyuX8MWxuVEnQgxZnFyB41PVnrYN6/s640/DSC04402.JPG" width="458" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Concept 3: Highlight</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think this is the strongest of my concepts in that the name of the concept and exhibition communicates best what the exhibition is about and what the purpose of exhibition is and its to highlight our work. I think it's also relevant to how we feel as a year group, our studio is pain white and we never put out work up and this is something that needs to change we need to embrace and showcase all of the work that we are producing this concepts communicates this. I also think this idea would look great if printed onto newspaper stock and a neon ink was used over the top! Making the poster bold and stand out in the corridor/ exhibition space. </div>

To kickstart this brief Simon and Lorraine ran a studio workshop to help start us developing a range of potential concepts for the brief. We worked in small groups to come up with a range of possible names that the exhibition could be called, we used a few processes to develop these names such as word association, using the dictionary and thesaurus as well as looking at antonyms of words to look at the concept from a different perspective. This studio was an extremely valuable session not only in helping to develop a range of concepts/ideas/names for this brief but also teaching use processes for concept development that I can use in future when developing concepts.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These were the range of names that our group came up with, it is a pretty extensive list considering we only had a short amount of time to produce it. There are a couple of names that I would like to move forward with at this stage, taken from this list and develop them into my own ideas. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>I really like the name Hatch, which is something I randomly thought of in the sessions, it's like we are hatching new talent on the course and this will be showcased in the exhibition. The hatching of a egg is also a process like it needs to laid and then hatched, this cycle mirrors the changing of the exhibition bi monthly. </li>
<li>I also like A2, simple, effective and straight forward - some of my main design principles!</li>
<li>I also like the name highlight because the exhibition is a highlighting of our work, this could lead to nice visual with brightly colours highlighter/neon inks</li>
</ul>

A main part of the design of the app is illustrations which represent different types of Detour the user can explore, each of these types of Detour is represented by a visual illustration. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdPykiOf8JXh5FcDo-8AetoTnT0reOqALIv2ijkX2HADEkGMFtb1JGZFiusbYlpfb8BImLV9QP2dTYzpeY4Kc2OFn-NFNQjjHERkYmH5RNAMuPWmsHXLXNpCrivWiWlGCFkh0mGESbYOv4/s1600/icon-deve-02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdPykiOf8JXh5FcDo-8AetoTnT0reOqALIv2ijkX2HADEkGMFtb1JGZFiusbYlpfb8BImLV9QP2dTYzpeY4Kc2OFn-NFNQjjHERkYmH5RNAMuPWmsHXLXNpCrivWiWlGCFkh0mGESbYOv4/s640/icon-deve-02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To begin designing these illustration I first collected a range of secondary visual research to inform my illustrations. This secondary research would inform how my illustrations will look.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdFksbbGiqvQRUE-RuqqUy_f8iL-45-FBHDJ_Orog5S-EVE2PxwG7oz3-hePSy6noXYNa0LZRp9sQ_FvigcXv61x_IXSIPXT5dGhEpbPRlYV_4AyaC0hWR2FYCY-wyq01j5j1BFmsA-Jar/s1600/icon-deve-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdFksbbGiqvQRUE-RuqqUy_f8iL-45-FBHDJ_Orog5S-EVE2PxwG7oz3-hePSy6noXYNa0LZRp9sQ_FvigcXv61x_IXSIPXT5dGhEpbPRlYV_4AyaC0hWR2FYCY-wyq01j5j1BFmsA-Jar/s640/icon-deve-01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Equally to researching visual imagery I have also looked into possible colours that can be used within my illustrations that reflect colours used within my visual research, I have looked at colour palettes which also work with my chosen colour palette for the application. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9ErTKj8V06f8fHg8UB_z_gSgAJ0XRAgkh5ae-EwSYAtSGIn3jFbjZFhKWe8QMhkWVoFapwELazyhDVrL8FbU8NFOdq_iceMiMN1XBLJLLz_QU58ntY4tnbNXmZTZok9npU8wp5Y5yp4tx/s1600/icon-deve-03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9ErTKj8V06f8fHg8UB_z_gSgAJ0XRAgkh5ae-EwSYAtSGIn3jFbjZFhKWe8QMhkWVoFapwELazyhDVrL8FbU8NFOdq_iceMiMN1XBLJLLz_QU58ntY4tnbNXmZTZok9npU8wp5Y5yp4tx/s640/icon-deve-03.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
From the resources I have gathered above I have developed a series of elements which I then combined into the different detours for the application. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX7YoQfytWJ3SEpq6Buwxg4mEViwVmJJdM9bzNQq-FzS-6aB-oBPoocOI4XuyMXiQb0u_89ow8bDyFVWDaNw1I375cSA4DjjJf3BN5-vpb7HWOoB1_hXCAMQt_vvXsr8rEaFhJOEljPOIz/s1600/icon-deve-04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX7YoQfytWJ3SEpq6Buwxg4mEViwVmJJdM9bzNQq-FzS-6aB-oBPoocOI4XuyMXiQb0u_89ow8bDyFVWDaNw1I375cSA4DjjJf3BN5-vpb7HWOoB1_hXCAMQt_vvXsr8rEaFhJOEljPOIz/s640/icon-deve-04.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAyrpPYTebQYX72SsxRC9FZqLP65qHzgc08DyeZEbHU5OQHXNH5PAvzGRtt1EoTCZXyXespRJVserIFCwN0wb91Sqo4SL_cefi50CMGzyz35e166DSNKhbx1xSbv9choD4IeWfR2uC4TMb/s1600/DSC04396.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAyrpPYTebQYX72SsxRC9FZqLP65qHzgc08DyeZEbHU5OQHXNH5PAvzGRtt1EoTCZXyXespRJVserIFCwN0wb91Sqo4SL_cefi50CMGzyz35e166DSNKhbx1xSbv9choD4IeWfR2uC4TMb/s640/DSC04396.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since the last module I have since learnt that Iconography is a key part of modern web design and application interface design, so I want to develop my skills in this area as I have in the past used stock iconography however for the brief I want to create my own set of icons to use within the application which also fit with the visual aesthetic I am trying to create. Initially I planned out all of the icons that I would need for the design of the interface, from here I began to draft and sketch possible symbols or icons associated with the word and possible ways of visualising the icons. From here I then began to work digitally so translate these initial rough design into vectors illustrated files. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaB5LTXxiHLTz7SqKeU6BXqz3RZV4FEZdVNiyLbN4J9kVY5nmED8yNXskBbXHPE8HCGuSxHpQKAOycrHT1GapwHBs5Nznq76VAIIh6e3cxPWcb3un2N421JVDDgR73qau3orZOPX0p-jlA/s1600/icons1-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaB5LTXxiHLTz7SqKeU6BXqz3RZV4FEZdVNiyLbN4J9kVY5nmED8yNXskBbXHPE8HCGuSxHpQKAOycrHT1GapwHBs5Nznq76VAIIh6e3cxPWcb3un2N421JVDDgR73qau3orZOPX0p-jlA/s640/icons1-01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When designing my icons I felt it was important to establish a series of design rules by which each icon followed to make them work as a set and keep the icons consistent. The main principle I designed the icons with was that the flat icons design a appeared to be bloated and this was so the icon looked like it was being seen through a fish eye lens, as seen above. The icons were also all designed with 5.9pt stroke weight. </div>

Within this brief I am wanting to starting working like a professional graphic designer, with a professional work flow and this starts with creating a set of brand guidelines before I design anything, to form a set of principle to follow while designing products for the brief. My initial guidelines are formed from the logo, colour scheme and typeface. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNpwa3C8vH0wkrNMfx1FWmlO5MF8BQBEGb8NlTUXtbAphl6lO5GaYl8x7dAGiTOCFioEwVRI7fPLZIIm4_eouxzgMw_dWu6vBGhWLs-gY7_Bqzrg3ed9-OJ7d-ssyvbwQSeBdJqQXnGBOl/s1600/Untitled-1-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNpwa3C8vH0wkrNMfx1FWmlO5MF8BQBEGb8NlTUXtbAphl6lO5GaYl8x7dAGiTOCFioEwVRI7fPLZIIm4_eouxzgMw_dWu6vBGhWLs-gY7_Bqzrg3ed9-OJ7d-ssyvbwQSeBdJqQXnGBOl/s640/Untitled-1-01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Within this brief I have had to take a different approach to developing a colour scheme as traditionally I look for colours that work together to form a palette however for this brief I need a set of 5 distinct colour which can used to identify different types of content and information. I experimented with a range of colours across tonal values some high and low, however I ultimately choose a range of vivid colours in order for them to stand out against the backdrop of the city which will form the main element of the mobile application. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY9TgCojgqPZe1SZ-O1Wmg8bBCGJxckNWeCxOme-8dZFyrQSQ1VO_yQRgZoSWw2ftRz0zH59O2jpkx31DvgX2bQPv_saMsz7nXuk5fVFcvbucfpApKYQUfxyzy3A6VEPngidBI8eB6_r-s/s1600/Untitled-1-02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY9TgCojgqPZe1SZ-O1Wmg8bBCGJxckNWeCxOme-8dZFyrQSQ1VO_yQRgZoSWw2ftRz0zH59O2jpkx31DvgX2bQPv_saMsz7nXuk5fVFcvbucfpApKYQUfxyzy3A6VEPngidBI8eB6_r-s/s640/Untitled-1-02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The final logo design in flat colour, however it can also appear in a more 3D style.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdQcvvI_Uvt1ZpIlafrtwKCu429-0O1i1Ixiv9SiDhNFs3bAyQHrv9fba6z8sSTFbYEyMD4nXADYrPuUrqaVrDvjPr_Pmfw2ydrz-g8l3GGHJOIa75fXLSaSfH_ECH7ls7tDwFLrDo97hK/s1600/Untitled-1-03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdQcvvI_Uvt1ZpIlafrtwKCu429-0O1i1Ixiv9SiDhNFs3bAyQHrv9fba6z8sSTFbYEyMD4nXADYrPuUrqaVrDvjPr_Pmfw2ydrz-g8l3GGHJOIa75fXLSaSfH_ECH7ls7tDwFLrDo97hK/s640/Untitled-1-03.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have also started to look at a range of possible fonts that I could work with and that work well when displayed on screen. I selected an initial range of fonts that are good digital display fonts however I ultimately choose the same font used within my logo, <b>Brandon Grotesque</b>, to keep visual consistency across the application. I choose <b>Promixa Nova</b> for body copy as it displays well on iPhone as is easy to read. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-R-hj0TdRMg0EQgkK-T7CImb-7TQxJwrrGfCCQZoXU7zfkjn0TeJg7UV_5L_wUApAv_1PqSBEQYcspu8VFZiP78ZRAsg9YDJ4w2-pq388btPZriNl3tCJogffAss-Rh0afuCXbrfnDX_Y/s1600/blog-guides1-01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-R-hj0TdRMg0EQgkK-T7CImb-7TQxJwrrGfCCQZoXU7zfkjn0TeJg7UV_5L_wUApAv_1PqSBEQYcspu8VFZiP78ZRAsg9YDJ4w2-pq388btPZriNl3tCJogffAss-Rh0afuCXbrfnDX_Y/s640/blog-guides1-01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Final set of brand guidelines for the typefaces and colours that I will be using across the design of the application and website. The primary colour for the brand itself will be the orange, the other colours form the secondary colour palette for the content of the application. </div>

<br />
Today we had another workshop on building our skills with conceptualisation. We initially got into groups of 5, and were given three words to choose from. I worked with Hannah, Thomas, Eve and Steph Buck and our three words were 'Ball', 'Curtain' and 'Court'. We finally decided on 'Curtain' and began brainstorming words relating to 'Curtain'. We then found out that we had to take this word forward and create a concept for a bar. <br />
<br />
<b>Initial Brainstorming</b><br />
Curtain / Rouge / Red Rope / Classic / Open Late / After Theatre Shows / Voyeur / Naming cocktails after famous icons / Dusk / Black / Ebony / Violet / Bleu / Blue Violet / Moody / Smokey Maroon / Deep / Celestial / High Fashion / Drape / Epilogue / Prologue / Old French / Courtine / Blinds / VIP / Exclusive / Dark / Reveal / Closure / Secretive / Encore / Midnight / Twilight / Eclipse / Glamour / Elegant / Mystery / Chandelier<br />
<br />
Once we completed our initial brainstorming we began to put together the basic details for our concept...<br />
<br />
<b>Name: Voyeur</b><br />
Where: West End, London<br />
Type: Cocktail Bar<br />
USP: Old french, Art Deco, 1920's France, Chicago, Jazz music<br />
Audience: Middle - Upper Class, Interest in Cocktails<br />
<br />
From here we moved on to create lists of products that would appear in the bar, that would need branding;<br />
<br />
<b>Product Types</b><br />
Drinks Menu, Glasses, Cigarettes/Cigars, Ash Trays, Coasters, Cocktails, Toilets, Shot Glasses, Signage, Receipts, Hand Towels, Napkins, Uniforms, Gloves, Tickets, Flyers, Snacks<br />
<br />
From here we categorised our research and idea's into different sections, before putting together our presentation.<br />
<br />
<b>Categorising</b><br />
Voyeur: It's a french word, from the 1920's era. Suggestion of exclusivity, privacy and secrecy. Watching the theatre, reflect watching and voyeurism. Classic, 1920's france, paris. Seeing something different. Curtained off. Dark, Mysterious, Classic. Blue and Purple. Looking into the 1920's. Jazz. Adaptable drinks to different audiences. <br />
<br />
<b>Drink Names:</b> Blue Velvet, The Salvador, OCD French, Midnight Blue, The Rouge, Blackout<br />
<br />
<b>Products:</b> Drinks menu, Script / Bookmark. Different Shaped glasses, individual, fashion statement.<br />
<br />
<b>Narrator:</b> Doorman. Sets the scene. Introduction. Introduce the drinks "Characters". Prologue, enter. Epilogue, leave. End of performance. Characters, specialist drinks, "Bringing down the curtain"<br />
<br />
<b>Atmosphere</b>: Dark, Moody, Midnight, Mysterious, Smokey, High Fashion, Glamorous, Jazz music, Piano, Chandellier, Classic<br />
<br />
Functioning of the bar: like a play or performance, greeting included at the door, narrative setting etc. Introductions start every 20 minutes. People dancing behind curtains, staffed dressed in 1920's attire, glove with logo, Screens/Curtains to separate sections of the bar.<br />
<br />
<b>Presentation Pitch</b><br />
Our name is Voyeur, this suggests an exclusive, private and secretive experience. It originates from the idea of watching plays and the west end, and also our initial term 'curtain'. Curtains and large strips of blue velvet will be used throughout the interior decor to emphasise our concept across the entire bar.<br />
<br />
Our bar will be located in the heart of London's West End, and will be aimed at middle to upper class people, who visit the theatre to watch musicals and plays in and around the area. Our audience is not limited, however our primary target is quite specific because of the concept & unique selling point. <br />
<br />
Our Parisian, 1920's themed cocktail bar also known as the 'golden age twenties' in Europe. Embodies luxury, night time glamour including live entertainment and music. West end bar, linked with the theatre and the concept that the themes within the bar alter due to the theatre productions.<br />
<br />
Our bar is a cocktail bar which serves modern drinks but the concept is used to develop the names of the cocktails; for example, The Salvador, named after Salvador Dali, Blue Velvet, named after the decor of the bar. The functioning of the bar also directly relates to the concept, as the staff will be dressed in 1920's attire, which is also branded with our logo. Screen will also be placed in the bar, to divide seating area's and reflect the concept of voyeurism. The bar will also be separated into different area's with names taken from the 1920's era, such as The Courtine (main bar), Matinee (VIP area) and finally 'Boudoire' for the toilets.<br />
<br />
We came up with the idea in keeping with the play theme that people would enter every 20 minutes with a drink at the door and introduced to the menu as if they were characters in a script. The doorman would be the narrator and set the scene with a short introduction. He would take them through to the different area's such as the Courtine and the Matinee and seat them down. The narrator would introduce them with a prologue to reflect the same structure as a play and leave them with an epilogue at the end to finish and complete the 'experience'. He would use phrases such as "Bring down the curtain" at the end to call a round for final orders. The atmosphere would be dark with blue lighting reflecting midnight, mystery and the scene in the 1920's era. It would have a glamorous and classy interior, with chandeliers, and an in house musician playing jazz. <br />
<br />
<b>Feedback</b><br />
The feedback from our presentation was really positive and the presentation was well timed at around 3 minutes. All together we had 2 hours for the entire concept pitch to be created and therefore there is plenty of room for our initial concept to be further pushed and developed.
